IPL Dry Eye Treatment – Lumenis OptiLight

Restore Comfort with IPL for Dry Eye

Dry eye is often caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)—when the tiny oil-producing glands in your eyelids become blocked or inflamed. This leads to poor-quality tears, irritation, and fluctuating vision.

At Happy Eyes Optometry (Surrey Hills), we use the Lumenis OptiLight IPL system—the world’s first and only FDA- and TGA-approved intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment designed specifically for dry eye. Backed by multiple peer-reviewed studies, OptiLight has been proven to improve tear film stability, reduce symptoms, and enhance quality of life.

How IPL Treatment Works

  1. Preparation
Protective shields are placed over the eyes. A cooling gel is applied to the treatment area (cheeks and upper and lower eyelids).
  2. Light Delivery
Gentle pulses of light are applied to the skin just below the eyes. This targets abnormal blood vessels and reduces inflammation associated with dry eye.
  3. Meibomian Gland Expression
Following IPL, our optometrists manually express the glands to clear blockages.
  4. Quick and Comfortable
Each session takes about 15–20 minutes to complete with minimal downtime.

Your IPL Treatment Plan

  • Assessment: Comprehensive dry eye testing with the Oculus Keratograph M5 to confirm MGD.
  • Treatment Course: A series of 4 IPL sessions, spaced 2–4 weeks apart.
  • Maintenance: Annual or half yearly maintanance sessions may be recommended.
  • Follow-up: Imaging and reviews to monitor your dry eye progression.

Is IPL Right for You?

IPL is most effective for:

  • Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)
  • Evaporative dry eye
  • Chronic inflammation not relieved by drops

It may not be suitable for all skin types or certain medical conditions. Our optometrists will confirm your eligibility during a comprehensive dry eye assessment.ent.
