Restore Comfort with IPL for Dry Eye
Dry eye is often caused by Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)—when the tiny oil-producing glands in your eyelids become blocked or inflamed. This leads to poor-quality tears, irritation, and fluctuating vision.
At Happy Eyes Optometry (Surrey Hills), we use the Lumenis OptiLight IPL system—the world’s first and only FDA- and TGA-approved intense pulsed light (IPL) treatment designed specifically for dry eye. Backed by multiple peer-reviewed studies, OptiLight has been proven to improve tear film stability, reduce symptoms, and enhance quality of life.
How IPL Treatment Works
- Preparation
Protective shields are placed over the eyes. A cooling gel is applied to the treatment area (cheeks and upper and lower eyelids). - Light Delivery
Gentle pulses of light are applied to the skin just below the eyes. This targets abnormal blood vessels and reduces inflammation associated with dry eye. - Meibomian Gland Expression
Following IPL, our optometrists manually express the glands to clear blockages. - Quick and Comfortable
Each session takes about 15–20 minutes to complete with minimal downtime.
Your IPL Treatment Plan
- Assessment: Comprehensive dry eye testing with the Oculus Keratograph M5 to confirm MGD.
- Treatment Course: A series of 4 IPL sessions, spaced 2–4 weeks apart.
- Maintenance: Annual or half yearly maintanance sessions may be recommended.
- Follow-up: Imaging and reviews to monitor your dry eye progression.
Is IPL Right for You?
IPL is most effective for:
- Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD)
- Evaporative dry eye
- Chronic inflammation not relieved by drops
It may not be suitable for all skin types or certain medical conditions. Our optometrists will confirm your eligibility during a comprehensive dry eye assessment.ent.
